For 32 years, owner Karl Davis has led KD Construction of Florida Inc. with the philosophy of doing what is best for the customer, even if it comes at a cost to the company. “Karl is more about making sure that they’re happy and they got the type of structure they wanted,” Vice President of Construction Operations Greg Raley says.

Based in Pompano Beach, Fla., the full-service shell contractor offers services that include cast-in-place concrete, masonry structures, and complete framing and drywall packages. Davis started the company in 1986, after being a partner in Davis Brothers, which he operated with his siblings.

Davis had innovative ideas and wanted to explore new platforms, including the use of the tunnel-form system. “There came a moment where Karl wanted to go out on his own and left his brothers,” Raley says. “The rest is history.”

Itzko Glass and Metal Inc. (IGM) believes in being selective about the projects it takes on. “We receive hundreds of plans each month from prospective clients. We pick and decide who we want to work with, which is a good spot to be in,” Founder and CEO Colin Itzko says. “We are not begging people for work – they come to us.”

Itzko credits the West Sacramento, Calif.-based full-service commercial glazing contractor’s success in finding clients to its efficiency and speed. “Our speed, and the technology we use, are primarily how we lock down work,” he adds. “I feel we can handle our workflow and review projects faster than our competitors can.”

After gaining industry experience at one of the most influential architectural firms in New York, Frank Fortino took destiny into his own hands and achieved his career goal in 1988 when he founded Metropolis Group. “I was aggressive and passionate in learning how projects were created, and I got to learn about the city process for filing projects and approvals,” he remembers. “I discover there is another world out there of building and zoning consultants. I wanted to see if I could take zoning, building codes and filing processes and procedures in city agencies to another level.”

Fortino founded the New York-based firm 30 years ago with the vision to create an organization that would provide expert guidance and trusted counsel to the construction industry. “It was not about just taking paper down to agencies in the city, but working with clients on obtaining approvals, permits, dismissal violations and consulting with the owner on every site, which has its own characteristics,” he says. “We want to maximize the potential of the development and earn the client a nice, functional building so they can capitalize on that.”

Some leaders surround themselves with people who agree with everything they do, but that is not the way CEO Richard Haines leads RLH Construction LLC. “[He] doesn’t assume that he’s right all the time or has the best way to do everything,” Vice President of Construction Operations Brandon Conaway says.
